Object

The purpose of this project was to better understand user-centered product design, as well as advertising, marketing, and working with a manufacturer, all in the context of crowdfunding for industrial designers. In short, this class gave us one method to build a small business.

Approach

We were tasked with designing a multi-purpose tote bag that was simple in appearance. The result was “UNWIND”, a combination of blanket and tote bag. Its primary material is water-resistant nylon to ensure a picnic stays dry. While also providing sufficient capacity for picnic supplies, it can quickly and easily be opened to take a break. No need to bring along an additional bulky picnic blanket. “UNWIND” is an everyday carry-all, grocery tote, lunch bag, and more.

Have you ever thought that carrying a blanket is inconvenient?
-

Sometimes being prepared for anything can weigh you down. Who wants to bring something as bulky as a blanket when you may not even need it? The beauty of multipurpose design is an object does not lose its value just because it’s not fulfilling a single goal.

Have you ever wanted to enjoy the sunshine and take a break?
-

We all say we’d rather be outside with the sun on our face, but more often than not we end up indoors staring at a screen. What if a design could inspire us to take part in the activities we truly enjoy the most?

Picnic Anytime

The "Unwind" tote bag unfolds from bag to blanket in one zip for a spontaneous picnic. It provides a clean surface for use indoors or out. It's perfect for an afternoon in the park.

Dimensions zipped: 15" H x 17" W
When unfolded, the blanket measures: 42" H x 34" W
