How does the Consumer buy?
Since the purchase is led by the need to replace an existing damage seat, consumers are mainly driven by the price vs the amount of features they can get, followed by the quality and the appearance of the product.
Insights:
- Feature labels currently cover most of the retail seats in aisle at both THD and Lowe's
- Most of the seats in-aisle have the same basic scallop rim detail, most look very similar.
- The competition tends to have much larger edge radii on the lid designs.
- There are more woods seats available than plastic seats.
Winning Strategy
We need feature-rich seats differentiated from current KOHLER/competitors’ products with a right price that helps us to stand out at the retailer shelf.
•Feature Rich: Defined Kohler Seats Product Architecture which helps to determine the differentiation
•Competitive Price: Maximize feasibility
•Complementary: Fits in the existing Kohler toilets. (aesthetically/functionally)
•Differentiation: obvious functional features and unique details
•Trendy: Good looking products that match trending bathroom styles
Framework for New Toilet Seat
Form development
We created three new toilet seat lids for existing toilet seats. Designs have an overhang function that lets users easily open and close the lid with minimal contact and were developed for various trending bathroom styles.

It’s all about the details
We tested each concept detail (including surface angles, surface depth, radius on the edge) many times in order to find the right balance and make beautifully sculpted products.
